Is unlocking your phone legal

Unlocking handsets is totally legal. As long as you fullfilled your contract obligations with your service provider. Once the contract is over the phone is effectively your property and your are free to unlock it and use another network or SIM card. IF however you are still under contract with your phone your network is not obliged to give you your unlock code. Also some networks downright refuse to give you your unlock code even when your contract has expired/

As I have mentioned in my other posts, getting your unlock code from your network can be difficult. There are a few approaches you can take. 1. Tell them that you are travelling to another country for 3 months or 6 months work and would like to be able to use a foreign SIM card in your phone. Upon your return you intend to take out a new contract with them. They may see an opportunity to regain your business and thus give you your unlock code. 2. Try ringing out of hours, when less experienced shift staff are working. The staff member may not realise that he/she should not give you the unlock code. I did this and surprisingly it worked with one of my phones. I had tried for weeks unsuccessfully to get my unlock code. I was first told that it would take 2 weeks, then told I wasn’t entitled to it. I rang late one night, got a staff member who simply talked me through the unlock and I got my phone unlocked.

If these don’t work, you can search online. There are free unlocks available for some makes of phone,e.g. nokia, but if you cant find your unlock code you just have to try one of the online companies. They are generally cheaper than what you would pay on the street, as street unlockers generally also use these online unlocking companies.
